The photo of the room looked normal to your eye and came out orange. The snow in the shadows went blue. The office shot has a faint green tint you can feel but not name. These are all the same problem: the camera guessed which light source it was under, and guessed differently from your brain.
Where color casts come from
Human vision constantly renormalizes. A white shirt reads as white under a tungsten bulb, under an overcast sky, and under fluorescent tubes, even though the light hitting it is different in each case. A camera has to choose a white-balance value, and it can get that wrong in a few predictable situations.
- Mixed lighting. Window light and a warm lamp in the same room. No single setting is correct for both halves of the frame.
- A dominant color in the scene. A camera’s auto white balance may read a red wall or a green lawn as a cast and “correct” it, shifting everything else the wrong way.
- Open shade and overcast skies. Light bouncing off blue sky produces cool, slightly blue images even at midday.
- Fluorescent and cheap LED lighting. These have gaps in their spectrum, which usually shows up as a green tint that temperature alone cannot fix.
- Reflected color. Sunlight through a colored curtain, or reflected from a painted wall, tints everything it reaches.
Two sliders, two different axes
Temperature — blue ↔ orange
Handles the big one. Indoor bulbs push warm, so you drag toward blue; open shade pushes cool, so you drag toward orange.
Tint — green ↔ magenta
The corrective axis for the residue temperature cannot reach. Fluorescent green and some LED casts live here.
Many people adjust only Temperature and then wonder why the image still feels slightly off. If a photo still looks wrong after the temperature correction, check for a remaining green or magenta tint.
The workflow

Set exposure roughly first
Color perception depends on brightness. Judging a cast on an image that is two stops dark wastes effort because you will reassess it after correcting exposure. Get it close, correct color, then refine exposure.

Find something that should be neutral
A known neutral card, white paper, a neutral wall, or a stainless appliance can serve as a reference. Do not assume every white-looking surface is neutral. If the frame has no reliable reference, use the least colorful element and treat the result as a visual estimate rather than a measurement.

Push temperature deliberately too far, then come back
Drag it well past correct in both directions and watch the neutral reference. Overshooting shows you where the boundaries are; the correct value is much easier to find on the way back than by creeping toward it.

Clean up the residue with tint
With temperature roughly right, look at the neutral reference again. Faintly green? Move Tint toward magenta. Faintly pink? Move it toward green. The correction is usually small, but it should be judged visually rather than copied from the Temperature value.

Check skin and known product colors
Skin is a sensitive reference, and an unfamiliar cast is easy to notice there. If the image includes a product whose real color you know, compare against that reference as well.

Add the mood back deliberately
Neutral is a starting point, not the goal. A sunset should be warm and a winter morning should be cool. Correct to neutral first so you know where zero is, then push back toward the mood on purpose.

Exposure or white balance first?
In practice: rough exposure → white balance → final exposure and contrast → sampled color replacement if needed. Color judgment is unreliable on a badly exposed image, and contrast decisions are unreliable on a color-cast one. A rough exposure pass, careful color correction, and final tonal adjustment help avoid going in circles.
One more thing that costs nothing: check your work on a second screen, or at least at a different time of day. Your eyes adapt to your monitor and to the light in the room, and a correction that looked perfect at midnight often looks distinctly blue the next morning.

How do I remove a yellow tint from a photo?
Move temperature toward blue until a neutral reference in the frame — a wall, paper, a white shirt — actually reads as neutral. If a faint tint remains after that, it is a green or magenta residue and belongs to the tint slider.
What is the difference between temperature and tint?
They are two perpendicular axes. Temperature moves along blue ↔ orange, tint along green ↔ magenta. Most casts need mostly temperature and a small amount of tint; fluorescent lighting is the common case where tint does the heavy lifting.
Can I fix white balance in a JPG, or do I need RAW?
You can correct a moderate cast in a JPG. RAW files retain more color information for extreme corrections, but visdraw does not currently import common camera RAW formats directly. First export the RAW file from your camera software to a browser-readable bitmap format.
Why does my photo still look wrong after fixing white balance?
Usually one of three things is happening: mixed lighting makes the cast uneven, exposure is far enough off to distort color judgment, or the reference was not actually neutral. A painted wall is a common false reference.
Is there an automatic white balance correction?
No. visdraw currently provides manual Temperature and Tint controls rather than automatic white balance. Find an object that should be neutral, then move through clearly cool and warm values before returning to the most convincing balance.
